Sam talking to a renter in Prahran

A Home for All

Everyone should have a safe place to call home.

Yet here in Victoria, more than 125,000 people are waiting for public housing. Many have been waiting more than 10 years. Thanks to the government’s neglect, on any given night almost 25,000 Victorians are homeless, including right here in Prahran.

The Greens and I have called on the Victorian Labor Government to invest in a big build of public housing – enough to meet demand so that we don’t have thousands of people on years-long waiting lists.

You can read our full housing plan here.

I will keep fighting to make sure everyone in our community has a safe place to call home. Please join me to help push the Victorian Government further and faster on ending homelessness.

Can I just say from the outset that the level of hardship, the level of housing insecurity, the level of difficulty that people are facing out there in the Victorian community when it comes to affordable housing, the idea or the fact that there are thousands of homes sitting empty in our community is just abhorrent.

Adjournment – Public Housing

Adjournment- Social Housing

My adjournment matter is for the Minister for Housing, and the action I seek is that the minister adopts the recommendations of the Ombudsman’s investigation into complaint handling in the Victorian social housing sector, which was released in July last year.

Adjournment- Rental Support

My adjournment matter is for the Minister for Consumer Affairs, Gaming and Liquor Regulation, and the action I seek is for the minister to protect renters with controls on rents, improved standards and more secure leases. Around 60 per cent of people in Prahran are renters, and renters need a fair go.
