Everyone needs a safe and secure place to call home.
Yet more Victorians are homeless than ever before. Each night there are around 30,000 people across the state who are sleeping on the street, in their cars or in unsafe or insecure houses.
Prahran has some of the highest levels of homelessness in our state. With hundreds of people in our community without a place to call home.
Our homelessness crisis has grown due to a lack of action from the Victorian Government, which has neglected public housing and underfunded homelessness services for decades.
To make matters worse, in recent years the Government has also been selling off public housing land to property developers, instead of building more public homes.
As a result, there are more than 120,000 Victorians on the public housing waiting list.
The good news is that ending homelessness in Victoria is possible and it’s possible by the end of the decade. Sam Hibbins and The Greens are passionate about ending homelessness and have a plan to achieve it.
The Victorian Greens have introduced a bill into state parliament to end homelessness by 2030.
Our Human Rights and Housing Legislation Amendment (Ending Homelessness) Bill will:
- Make housing a human right
- Create a plan to end homelessness in Victoria by 2030
- Set a target for building more public housing homes
- Set a target for funding homelessness and housing services
Homelessness is the number one social justice issue facing our community. Just like public health and education, governments have a responsibility to provide public homes for people that need them.
Join our campaign and be part of ending homelessness in Victoria.
