Sam Hibbins to ask the Minister for Public and Active Transport —
What action is being taken to prevent vehicles from failing to stop for a stationary tram, including trafficable level access tram stops.
Response from the Minister for Public and Active Transport
The Allan Labor Government has funded a package of safety and accessibility works for tram stops, which the Department of Transport and Planning is rolling out in collaboration with Yarra Trams to retrofit existing stops with additional safety and accessibility features. Depending on the stop environment, options include:
- New road line-marking, such as “STOP FOR TRAM” stencils and an approach ‘zig-zag’ line;
- New dedicated tram stop signage to alert motorists to stop locations;
- Relocation of existing stops which have been identified to have compromised sight lines or insufficient clearance from side streets (especially on routes with longer trams); and
- Installation of tactile ground surface indicators at all kerbside stops, to aid the location of the stop flag for people who have impaired vision.
These works have been completed along Route 58, and Routes 57, 59 and 82 are the next priority routes to ensure suitability for the upcoming deployment of next-generation G-class trams.
